What are Swing States? Why are they important?

Swing states, also called “battleground states” or “purple states,” are states “that are believed to play a key role in the outcome of presidential elections” and in which candidates from both the Democratic and Republican parties “a enjoy a similar level of support.”

These states are unpredictable in presidential elections, making them critical locations for candidates during their campaigns. They are seen as “must-wins” by both mainstream parties to secure the 270 electoral votes needed for the presidency.

Florida was not a swing state in this general election.

A USA TODAY report found that while big GOP victories in Florida in the past two election cycles had drawn national attention, the state has been in the red for decades. With the presidency of Donald Trump in 2016, the previously politically “purple” state trended into the red.

There was once a time when it was assumed that the state had a greater influence on the outcome of elections. They highlight the 2000 presidential election, in which it took a month for George W. Bush to be declared the winner by just 537 votes.

“The influx of Cubans, retirees and service workers into the Orlando-area booming theme park economy and other groups resulted in a state that was far more diverse, both economically and politically, than many of its southern brethren,” said 270 To Win.

“As a result, it experienced a period in which it was considered the ultimate battleground state, whose population was a microcosm of the country as a whole.”
