Hurricane Helene hit Florida's Gulf Coast, making landfall late Thursday as a strong Category 4 storm. It brought 140 mph winds, torrential rain and a record storm surge before moving inland across Georgia and the Carolinas.

Millions of customers across the Southeast are without power as forecasters warned of “life-threatening flash floods and urban flooding” for the southern Appalachians. A flash flood emergency has been declared for the city of Atlanta. Mandatory evacuations were ordered in parts of North Carolina as swelling rivers threatened nearby homes. The Associated Press reported that at least four deaths were attributed to Helene, which was downgraded to a tropical storm on Friday.

Significant damage occurred in Cedar Key, Florida, and Steinhatchee, Florida, where storm surge increased and moved mobile homes. Streets in Tarpon Springs, Florida were flooded with water.

In Crystal River, Florida, more than 100 people and 50 pets were rescued from floodwaters overnight, the sheriff's office there said.

Photos from across the region showed the storm's aftermath.
