A series of Republican victories in key states has spurred this potential shift in power. In West Virginia, a long-held Democratic seat was flipped when Republican Gov. Jim Justice claimed the seat vacated by outgoing Sen. Joe Manchin, who decided not to run. The judiciary's victory in a state that has slipped increasingly into the red in recent years represents a decisive win for Republicans.

Another big upset occurred in Ohio, where Bernie Moreno, a businessman endorsed by former President Donald Trump, defeated incumbent Democrat Sherrod Brown.
