Carbajal maintains his big lead in updated returns

Incumbent Salud Carbajal led Thomas Cole by nearly 30 percentage points in the race for the 24th District seat in the House of Representatives in updated election results released Tuesday evening.

The margin of more than 54,000 votes represents the total in the district, which spans all of Santa Barbara County, part of San Luis Obispo County and the cities of Ojai and Ventura in Ventura County.

Carbajal, a Democrat, received 123,725 votes to 69,308 votes for Cole, a Republican.

Carbajal, who lives in Goleta, is seeking his fifth term. Cole is a campaign data analyst living in Santa Barbara County.

The two candidates emerged as the top two vote-getters in the March primary.

House members serve two-year terms and take office in January following the November general election.

Polls close at 8 p.m. on Tuesday, but everyone whose turn it is at that time will have the opportunity to cast their vote. The first round of voting is expected to be released at 8:30 p.m. The initial results include ballots received and processed before Election Day.

The elections department then counts in-person ballots on Tuesday and updates the counts throughout the night. After these counts, the next update is expected on Thursday.
