US Senate: Baldwin vs. Hovde

US Senate: Baldwin vs. Hovde

MADISON (WLUK) — Both major party candidates in Wisconsin's U.S. Senate race will be in Madison on election night hoping to celebrate victory with their supporters.

Incumbent Democratic Sen. Tammy Baldwin will hold her election night party at the Orpheum Theater on State Street, next door to the State Capitol.

Baldwin, 62, has served two terms in the U.S. Senate, defeating former Gov. Tommy Thompson by 5.5 percentage points in 2012 and defeating former state Sen. Leah Vukmir by 10.83 percentage points in 2018.

The Madison native planned to spend Election Day campaigning from Milwaukee to Madison. On Monday she was in Green Bay, Oshkosh, Stevens Point and Milwaukee.

“I think voters will be paying attention in the final days to who is on their side,” Baldwin said. “Who fights for them? I have always fought for the working people and families of this state. My opponent, Eric Hovde, is self-serving in his politics. It would enrich the rich and big corporations. I work for hardworking Wisconsinites.”

Baldwin was a proponent of “Made in America” initiatives during her time in the Senate, including efforts to support the state's dairy industry.

When asked about the rise in food prices in recent years, Baldwin echoed Vice President Kamala Harris' stance that price gouging was to blame.

“My solution would be to hire a consumer advocate — a police officer, if you will — to investigate corporate price gouging,” Baldwin said. “I support a bill that would empower the Federal Trade Commission to be the police officer.”

Baldwin's election night party at the Orpheum Theater opens to the public at 8 p.m. She is expected to address her supporters once a winner is announced in the race.

FOX 11's Ben Krumholz will cover the meeting and provide live reports throughout the night on FOX 11 News and fox11online.com.

Republican Senate candidate Eric Hovde hosts his election night party at the Edgewater Hotel in Madison.

Around 8 p.m., as polls closed in Wisconsin, he addressed a crowd of supporters and expressed optimism about his race.

Hovde was born and grew up in the capital. He is a graduate of UW-Madison. He and his wife Sharon have two adult daughters and three grandchildren.

Hovde, an entrepreneur, founded and ran his first company in his 20s and later founded and built many more. He then expanded his business, buying troubled community banks and rehabilitating them.

Hovde is committed to the idea of “restoring the American dream” and wants to bring his business background to Washington, DC

If elected, he would first address the problems of the US economy, he said.

“We must stop the reckless spending that has fueled inflation. We must implement growth-enhancing policies like the deregulation that is hurting so many businesses and farmers. We need to get our energy sector going more robustly to reduce energy costs, because energy costs go into everything,” Hovde said.

It was about nine months ago when Hovde decided to run for the U.S. Senate. He said he has probably only taken one day off since announcing his candidacy, traveling across the state to meet voters and listen to their concerns.

In addition to the economy, Hovde also wants to secure the borders and says he will work to create new immigration policies that will lead to safe communities.

Before Election Day, Hovde spent the final two days of his campaign traveling on his “Time for Change Bus Tour,” which included stops in Green Bay, Appleton, Oshkosh, Fond du Lac and Manitowoc.

“One of my big messages from this campaign is that we need to come together and stop putting on the blue jersey or the red jersey and, as Americans, put on the red, white and blue jersey because we have real problems to solve and a “house divided.” cannot stand,” Hovde added. “That’s why I think we need to come together, reduce the rhetoric and put an end to all of this.”
