Who won Michigan in 2020? Summary of presidential election results

Tuesday was Election Day, and millions of Michigan residents cast their votes in presidential, congressional and local elections.

Our latest poll, released Friday and conducted by Lansing-based EPIC-MRA for the Detroit Free Press and its media partners, found Democratic Vice President Kamala Harris leading Republican former President Donald Trump 48% to 45% due to growing support Trump is leading among black voters and women in Michigan, although that lead was within the poll's margin of error.

Michigan is a swing state, sometimes called a “purple” state, meaning it could end up giving its votes to either the Republican or Democratic presidential candidate.

While the 2024 race is still unclear, here's how Michigan voted in 2020.

The presidency is decided by the votes of the Electoral College. The electoral college consists of 538 electors. Each voter casts one vote; A presidential candidate needs 270 of those votes to win.

Former President Donald Trump won 232 electoral votes in the 2020 presidential election. His opponent and current President Joe Biden won 306 electoral votes, 16 of which came from Michigan.

Biden also won the popular vote in Michigan with 2,804,040 votes, while Trump received 2,649,852 votes.

Wayne County, the state's most populous county, gave Biden 597,170 votes while Trump received 264,553 votes.

The second-largest county, Oakland County, gave 434,148 votes to Biden, while 325,971 people voted for Trump.

In the 2020 race for U.S. Senate in Michigan, Democrat Gary Peters edged out Republican John James to win with 49.9% of voters, or 2,734,586 votes.
