'Virginia is in play:' Trump focuses on economy and immigration at Salem rally

Former President Donald Trump visited the Salem Civic Center on Saturday evening to give a speech just three days before the election.

Trump told the thousands of supporters both inside and outside the rally that if they went out and voted, Virginia would turn red.

Trump's speech lasted over 90 minutes.

“I want to start with a very simple question and if you don't mind, are you better off today than you were four years ago?” Trump asked the crowd, prompting a chorus of “no” from the crowd.

Nearly 7,000 people streamed into the Civic Center for the rally, with tens of thousands outside to watch the rally on a Jumbotron.

“This election is a choice between whether we will have four more years of incompetence or failure, or whether we will begin the four greatest years in the history of our country,” Trump told the crowd.

Trump leaned heavily on his economic message that he had created prosperity before and would do it again.

“If I win, you’ll be three days away from the best jobs, the biggest paychecks and the brightest economic future the world has ever seen,” Trump said. “We're going to have something called no tip tax and no overtime tax. and no tax on Social Security for our great seniors.”

Trump also highlighted one of the biggest issues of this campaign: illegal immigration.

To me it is the biggest threat to our nation; “Much bigger than those horrible numbers I just read out,” Trump declared. “Much bigger than inflation or the economy because you are destroying the fabric of our country.”

Trump highlighted several stories of illegal aliens killing American citizens under the Biden/Harris administration and promised change if he retakes the White House.

I hereby call for the death penalty for any migrant who kills an American citizen or law enforcement officer. And I will immediately ban all sanctuary cities in America.

He ended the speech with an optimistic message to all Americans.

“We will be a free and proud nation again,” Trump said. “Everyone will prosper.” Every family will prosper. And every day will be full of possibility and hope and our beautiful American dream. We will have our American dream again very soon.

Despite the positivity of Trump and other Republicans there, Virginia remains a Democratic-leaning state, with polls expecting Harris to win on November 5.

Trump believes they will be the first to change that by putting the commonwealth red for the first time since 2004.
