The Green Bay Packers have already completed one of the biggest deals of the year in the entire NFL when they acquired backup quarterback Malik Willis from the Tennessee Titans after training camp in late August.

It may not have seemed like the flashiest move at the time, but Willis has proven to be an invaluable addition. He answered the call early in the season when he replaced Jordan Love (MCL sprain) for two games. And then he came to the rescue on Sunday against the Jacksonville Jaguars when Love left the game with a groin injury.

Willis is 3-0 in games played and was instrumental in the Packers going 6-2 heading into their Week 9 game against the Lions.

The Packers also added players in other ways — kicker Brandon McManus via free agency — but they still have a week to improve their roster through trades.

The NFL trade deadline is approaching and teams across the NFL will be looking to make that one acquisition that can help them rise above the top.

Here's what you should know about the 2024 NFL trade deadline:

When is the NFL trade deadline?

The 2024 NFL trade deadline is Tuesday, November 5th at 3 p.m.

Will the Packers make a trade at the NFL deadline?

The Packers haven't shied away from making strong moves to improve the roster in 2024.

They were active players in free agency this offseason when they acquired Xavier McKinney and Josh Jacobs. Both helped the team enormously in the first half of the season.

When Packers general manager Brian Gutekunst didn't like what he had in backup quarterbacks Sean Clifford and Michael Pratt, he acquired Willis from the Titans for a 2025 seventh-round pick.

Will they make another move to improve the roster or acquire more draft capital for the future?

The defense could be the place where additions or subtractions are made.

NFL Trade Rumors: Green Bay Packers

In an article in The Athletic, Dianna Russini reported that she expects Packers defensive end Preston Smith to draw interest before the deadline. However, whether the Packers would consider trading one of their longest-tenured players is uncertain.

Smith, the team's second-oldest member at 31, joined the Packers as a free agent in 2019 and signed a four-year extension in 2022.

Smith ranks sixth on the Packers' all-time list with 44 sacks. His best sack season came in 2019 when he had 12. He has 2.5 sacks this season, up from eight last year.

He has never missed a game in his five-plus seasons with the team and it would be difficult to replace the leadership he provides for the NFL's youngest roster.

Packers trade deadline history

However, recent history shows us that the Packers could trade a popular veteran player.

Last year, they made a surprising move before the trade deadline when they traded safety Rasul Douglas and a 2024 fifth-round pick to the Buffalo Bills for a 2024 third-round pick.

The Packers used that selection to sign Missouri linebacker Ty'Ron Hopper with the 91st pick overall.

In 2022, the Packers remained quiet before the trade deadline while some of their NFC North counterparts were active.

NFL Trade Deadline Rumors: Detroit Lions

The team ahead of the Packers in the NFC North, the Detroit Lions, appear to be aggressively fighting to maintain their spot at the top of the division heading into the franchise's first Super Bowl.

There has been a lot of talk around the team in recent weeks about acquiring a pass rusher after star Aidan Hutchinson was sidelined for the season with a broken tibia and fibula.

Lions coach Dan Campbell said Monday the team is exploring all options. Asked if a trade was imminent, Campbell told reporters: “It could be. Yes, that could be the case.”

Former Packers defensive end Za'Darius Smith is a player who is ready to pick up the phone when the Lions call.

Smith, 33, recently said in his first season with the Cleveland Browns that “it could look good” if he was traded to the Lions.
