Just days before Election Day, an upstate New York author allegedly beat up a stranger in a supermarket because he was carrying Donald Trump gifts, authorities said.

Robert Yott, 60, is accused of confronting a supporter of the former president about wearing a Trump 2024 hat at Tops Friendly Markets around 10 a.m. Friday, Bath Village police said.

Yott then allegedly kicked the victim in the mouth and head several times, resulting in a bloody mouth and broken teeth, police said.

Village police said the alleged attack “appears to be a random act of violence.”

Yott was arrested and charged with second-degree assault, a felony, and fourth-degree criminal coercion, Bath police said.

Yott is known in the community as the local author of two military history books, the Wellsville Sun reported.

The village of Bath has about 5,500 residents and is in Steuben County, where twice as many Republican than Democratic voters are registered, according to state records.

Yott did not immediately respond to an email seeking comment late Sunday.

Political tensions in the US are running high ahead of Election Day on Tuesday as Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris battle to become the next president.
