Strong winter storm on election day

BOZEMAN – Our first burst of strong winter weather will sweep across Montana from west to east Monday evening into Wednesday morning.

This storm has a lot of moisture, cold air and strong wind gusts. This combination will create dangerous travel conditions, particularly on mountain passes.

There are numerous winter weather highlights throughout the state on both sides of the Divide.

A WINTER STORM WARNING is now in effect on I-90 over Lookout Pass into northern Idaho until 4 p.m. Tuesday. With wind gusts of 30 to 50 mph, 8 to 16 inches of snow is possible over Lookout Pass.

A BLIZZARD WARNING is in effect for the Rocky Mountain Front through Tuesday morning. Up to 14 inches of snow and peak wind gusts of up to 80 miles per hour are possible. These include Marias Pass, Logan Pass, Rogers Pass, East Glacier, Saint Mary and Babb.

A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect for the Butte/Blackfoot region from 5:00 p.m. Monday through 11:00 a.m. Tuesday. 1 to 6 inches of snow is possible, along with short periods of intense snow called snow squalls that can reduce visibility to zero and create extremely dangerous travel conditions.

A winter weather advisory is available for the Madison, Gallatin, Bridger areas from 5:00 p.m. Monday to 5:00 a.m. Wednesday. Snow accumulations of approximately 2 to 6 inches are possible, with locally heavy snow and wind gusts up to 45 mph possible, resulting in blowing snow and poor visibility for US 191 and down into Island Park, ID.

There is a wind advisory for the Livingston area from 3:00 p.m. Monday to 9:00 a.m. Tuesday. Peak wind gusts of up to 60 miles per hour are possible.

Strong wind warnings are also in effect for the northern Front Range and Lewistown areas Monday night through Tuesday night. Peak gusts of 60 to 80 mph are possible, along with intermittent snow.
