Flooding rain is likely this evening

Flooding rain is likely this evening

A tornado warning is currently in effect for areas of Springfield back to the southwest until 9 p.m. The risk for severe weather is highest from western Table Rock Lake to northwest Arkansas. This severe weather area is shrinking quickly, so the threat of severe weather is expected to decrease in the next few hours.

What I think is the biggest concern is that there will be very heavy flooding again tonight. A line of strong thunderstorms is occurring along I-49. Deep tropical moisture flows into this area. The upper level storm is moving slowly eastward, so storms will develop over the same areas for several hours this evening. Another 2-4 inches with local amounts up to nearly 6 inches are possible tonight.

This is in addition to what has already fallen! The ground is saturated and widespread flooding is possible tonight into early Tuesday morning. This could impact some people's ability to get to the polls quickly. Rain should continue as the sun rises across south-central Missouri and north-central Arkansas. This is the same area that received heavy rain early Monday morning. Tonight temperatures will drop into the upper 50s.

The rain should shift east and end around midday. Cloud cover should remain for the rest of the day. High temperatures only reach the low 60s.

The improvement will take place on Wednesday. Clear skies are forecast and there may be some fog in the morning. Temperatures will drop below 40°C. High temperatures should return to the mid 60s.

The next storm will then begin to burrow into the southwestern United States, similar to this current storm. If the storm continues there for another day, there is a good chance it will rain starting Friday night and continuing through Saturday. High temperatures should remain in the low 60s.

Currently, mostly cloudy skies are forecast for Sunday, which will clear by next Monday. Little temperature change is expected with lows in the 40s and highs in the 60s. Now that the ground is saturated, it will be much more difficult to bring temperatures up to the high highs we have been experiencing recently. The bottom line is that consistently cooler weather could finally arrive.
