Man is said to have hit election judges in the face

An Orland Park, Illinois, man allegedly punched an election judge in the face after running past several voters at a local polling station on Sunday, according to police.

Orland Village police said 24-year-old Daniel Schmidt was charged with two counts of aggravated assault on a victim over 60, two counts of aggravated assault in a public place, five counts of resisting arrest and one count was charged with aggravated assault and disorderly conduct.

At approximately 11 a.m. on November 3rd, police were dispatched to the Orland Park Township Office for reports of a man causing a disturbance on the voting line.

When officers arrived, they found a man – later identified as Schmidt – being restrained by several people in the building.

A preliminary investigation revealed that Schmidt entered the municipal building and walked past numerous voters waiting in line to cast their ballots.

One of the election judges stationed at the entrance told Schmidt he had to walk to the end of the line and wait his turn to vote. Police said Schmidt refused.

After Schmidt refused to follow the judge's orders, another election judge came over to help him and again asked Schmidt to stand at the back.

Instead, Schmidt allegedly tried to push past the second judge, but the judge and several other staff members held him back.

Schmidt began shouting profanities before allegedly punching the election judge and knocking his glasses off.

At that point, police added, several guests jumped in to hold Schmidt until officers arrived.

According to police, when officers attempted to arrest Schmidt, he resisted until he was eventually handcuffed.

Schmidt faces two counts each of aggravated assault on a person over 60 and of aggravated assault in public, all felonies, as well as five counts of resisting arrest and one count of disorderly conduct, which are considered misdemeanor charges.
