Beth Broderick and Caroline Rhea's New Film Contains References to 'Sabrina' (Exclusive)

Beth Broderick and Caroline Rhea bring their witchy magic to Hallmark's Countdown to Christmas.

She is best known for her roles as Aunt Zelda and Aunt Hilda on the hit ABC and later The WB series Sabrina, the teenage witchBroderick, 65, and Rhea, 60, are teaming up again for Hallmark Channel's new marquee film Holiday conflictPremieres Sunday, November 3rd at 8pm ET.

In a recent interview with PEOPLE, the film's stars announced a special Sabrina Easter Egg Rhea sneaked into the film for fans to discover.

“(Rhea) was wearing an item of clothing from Sabrina She thinks people will recognize it, it's a pretty distinctive piece of clothing, but I don't want to give it away,” says Broderick. “People have to figure it out for themselves.”

Broderick, who also stars in the Netflix series The merry gentlemen This November I indulged in nostalgia Sabrina is fun too. “I actually have a necklace from Aunt Zelda that I smuggled in once or twice,” she adds.

Meanwhile, Rhea remembers slipping back into Aunt Hilda's shoes for a moment during filming. “I once hinted at using magic – which I thought was a hilarious thing – just out of habit,” she reveals.

In Holiday conflictBroderick and Rhea play Barbara and Kath, feuding mothers who accidentally hooked their adult children onto a dating app. “Determined to end the romance, the two mothers bond, only to discover they have more in common than they thought,” the official synopsis reads. “As their children’s love blossoms, an unexpected friendship also develops between their meddling mothers.”

According to the actresses, the roles of Barbara and Kath felt in some ways like a remake of Zelda and Hilda.

“Kath is like Hilda, completely free-spirited,” says Rhea, joking: “I always seem to play single women, I don’t know what that is.”

Broderick agreed, adding that the dynamic between their newest characters is “pretty similar because we're pretty damn well typecast.”

“You know, Caroline’s an extravert, I’m an introvert,” she says. “I remember walking onto the set with Caroline one day many years ago when we were there Sabrinaand she looked at me and said, “Oh my God, I just figured it out.” “You're a total nerd.” And I'm like, “Right now, did you just get that?”

Ultimately, it was the chance to work with her longtime comedic partner again that led Rhea to sign Broderick as her co-star Holiday conflict.

“I suggested they hire Beth because, for one thing, it seemed like a fun twist on nostalgia,” says Rhea, noting that the friends and co-stars “have been doing comedy together for so long” that they have a “shared history “You can benefit from the collaboration.

She continues, “I just thought why not use the natural comedic chemistry that Beth and I had on that show and, you know, put her in a different scenario.”

For Broderick, creating some Christmas magic with her pal was a no-brainer, and she shared that the film sounded “like a lot of fun.”

“There is no one I would rather be next to, in front of a camera or just on the side, than Caroline Rhea,” she says.
