Chicago Bears Week 9 Notes: 2024 Bears hit new low in Arizona

Chicago Bears Week 9 Notes: 2024 Bears hit new low in Arizona

Just when things couldn't get any worse, they did just that, yesterday in the desert against the Arizona Cardinals. From what I've seen, there isn't much positive. Let's get this out of the way:

attack:

  • Rome Odunze people. He's real, he's on our team, and it's time he was used more like he was yesterday. Rome always seemed to be open and winning their matches. I have to like what you see. He significantly outperformed one of the two WRs selected ahead of him in this year's draft. This is pretty much my last positive result, so buckle up.
  • The deep ball Caleb threw to Rome was beautiful. Almost gave it to me to There's plenty of time to follow through and make his next move, but it's good to see that QB1 has addressed one of his previous weaknesses.
  • Has anyone seen Cole Kmet? I think we left him in London.
  • Everyone knows (by now) that I am a Roschon fan. I love what he brings to the game when he's there. But using him for a sweep on 3rd and 5 is just a bad decision. A terrible call, actually.
  • Punishments continue to kill us. Injuries even more. It seemed like Caleb was behind the posts running for his life on every play. He missed a few shots he would have liked, and Keenan Allen had his worst game as a Bear.
  • Lord, I hope Darnell Wright is well.
  • Speaking of injuries, WTF was Eberflus thinking about keeping Caleb late in the 4th quarter?! I understand getting live reps, but if the offensive line can't stop anyone, how can you use the QB1 responsibly?!? Of course Caleb was hurt. Of course, Flus takes no responsibility for this step.
  • Guys, Larry Borom. That's why we haven't seen him in action for a while. He definitely took over the game there in the second half. And not in a good way.
  • OL depth. Orienteering talent. OL problems.

defense:

  • I wrote in my Players to Watch article (above) that both teams need to showcase their reliable TEs this week. Chicago doesn't and Arizona does. Once the Cardinals started targeting McBride, they took the lead and never looked back. We had no answer for McBride.
  • We didn't have an answer for James Connor either. Or Trey Benson. Or (checks notes) Emari Demercado…?! The Cardinals OL bullied our beloved Bears all day and the RBs for Arizona looked like All-Pros against our LBs and secondary. (In fact, I've been a big fan of Demercado since its inception TCU days, but it would have been nice if Austin Booker had wrapped him up instead of pushing him for the late half.)
  • Neither Gervon Dexter Sr. nor Andrew Billings had a good game yesterday. I'm hoping Billings' injury is minor and doesn't keep him out, but our iDL depth remains an issue.
  • I was pleased with how Tyrique Stevenson stepped up and bounced back from last week's newsworthy performance. He had a difficult task and was up to the challenge.
  • Who else was up to the challenge? Reddy Stewardthat's who!! I love watching young people make plays in their limited snaps. Forcing a peanut punch fumble against Marvin Harrison Jr. was the highlight of the game for me. However, I now feel more depressed than excited about this fact…
  • Even though he missed a crucial tackle, I love the effort with which Austin Booker plays. He follows every play and makes more tackles than he has any business doing. Jack Sanborn plays with a similar fire.
  • It's a shame that energy alone doesn't stop drives or win games on its own. Talent, skill and discipline also play a key role and currently the Chicago Bears appear to be at a disadvantage in all three categories.

Special teams:

  • Man, I love Cairo. I wish we had it in 2018.
  • Tory Taylor boomed her all day. Maybe a little too far as coverage teams had a hard time getting there in time, but he came to play.
  • Has anyone ever seen an onsides punt in a real game? I think that was a first for me. #facepalm.

That's all I have today. I can't wait to finish this game and get the taste out of my mouth. I just hope the injuries aren't too bad.

What's wrong with you? What did you take with you?
