Who act? Former NFL manager accuses Lions of odd edge rusher move

Mock trade proposals for the Detroit Lions to add an edge rusher are dominating the NFL conversation. But of all the suggestions experts have made, former league manager Mike Tannenbaum's may be the most questionable.

On ESPN's Stand up On Friday morning, Tannenbaum, the former executive vice president of football operations for the Miami Dolphins and longtime manager of the New York Jets, proposed a trade so bold that it raised eyebrows from analyst Bart Scott and sent Ryan Clark off his perch.

Tannenbaum suggested that the Lions send three first-round picks, a second-round pick and Jahmyr Gibbs to the Cleveland Browns in exchange for star edge rusher Myles Garrett.

“And the Detroit Lions will win the Super Bowl!” declared Tannenbaum, unshakable in his conviction.

Scott and Clark weren't alone in their confusion.

“They’re going to use Joe Louis’s fist,” Dan Graziano quipped. “The GM building, that big bridge to Canada – what else?”

“The Lions desperately need a pass rusher,” explained Tannenbaum. “Aidan Hutchinson may return, but Garrett is still young, in his prime, and Detroit could win the Super Bowl. Jahmyr Gibbs is good, but he’s replaceable.”

Adding Garrett, the reigning NFL Defensive Player of the Year, would undoubtedly boost Detroit's Super Bowl chances and potentially extend their championship window by years. The 29-year-old has four sacks in eight games this season. With Hutchinson sidelined for an undisclosed amount of time, Garrett could provide the pressure Detroit has been missing since the game against the Cowboys.

However, Scott could not hide his surprise and urged Tannenbaum to make the weighty suggestion. Graziano added: “If you think about it, it's actually four (first-round picks) since Gibbs was a first-rounder last year.”

Nevertheless, Tannenbaum remained steadfast.

“Brad Holmes came from the Rams – 'F them picks' – and they would be low picks anyway. “They’re not going to get a player of Garrett’s caliber,” Tannenbaum argued.

He suggested that with Detroit's offense in full swing, Garrett could be the one to push them over the top, calling him “the best player in the NFL not to be named quarterback.”

But Scott didn't buy it. “Right team, wrong player,” he replied. “Go get Za'Darius Smith and keep your pick. Jahmyr Gibbs is their home run hitter. This team thrives on the running game. Za’Darius Smith would be fine, and you can get him for a box of Kool-Aid.”

Clark returned to the set and added, “This team is good enough without making *that* type of change.”

“If you give up Jahmyr Gibbs, you give up part of your offensive identity,” Clark added. “And that identity is what drives this team to a Super Bowl.”

The NFL trade deadline is Tuesday at 4 p.m. While it's unlikely the Lions will make a big move for a pass rusher this weekend, the clock is ticking as they look ahead to Sunday's game in Green Bay.
