The Titans finally win, but need overtime to beat the New England Patriots

The Tennessee Titans needed every other Sunday.

The Titans topped the New England Patriots with a 20-17 overtime win at Nissan Stadium on Sunday, ending a three-game losing streak and recording their first home win of the Brian Callahan era. The Patriots forced overtime with a clutch drive that culminated in a touchdown as time expired, but the Titans forced their way down the stretch in overtime with a 7:28 drive that resulted in a Nick Folk field goal ended that gave the Titans the lead and left New England with an opportunity to equal or exceed the lead.

The Titans won the coin toss and got the ball first in overtime. Quarterback Mason Rudolph, starting for the third consecutive game in place of the injured Will Levis, led the team in the win thanks to two over-the-middle connections with receiver Calvin Ridley Patriots territory. Running back Tony Pollard got the team into the red zone with a third-down conversion. A botched snap on a third-and-2 from the 7-yard line forced the field goal.

New England missed the chance to tie the game and threw an interception to Amani Hooker to end the game.

Around the fourth quarter

The Titans (2-6) made several of the common mistakes that had doomed their chances earlier in the year, but a timely fourth-quarter strip sack by edge rusher Arden Key led to a fumble recovery by defensive tackle Jeffery Simmons that scored the tying score The Titans are at New England's 26-yard line. Five plays later, quarterback Mason Rudolph threw a rainbow to receiver Nick Westbrook-Ikhine for a 6-yard touchdown.

After throwing the touchdown, Rudolph sprinted to the sideline to meet Callahan and hugged him as if to drive away months of lost leads, missed opportunities and botched fourth quarters.

That triumph could have been the end, but New England had two possessions in the final five minutes, the last of which began at the 50-yard line after the Titans followed up another long punt return. Maye led the Patriots down the field with a poise beyond his experience and set the team up with a vital play from the 5-yard line with four seconds left. Maye reversed course several times, changing direction repeatedly but keeping his eyes downfield before finding running back Rhamondre Stevenson to force the overtime win.

Wasted opportunities

The fact that the Titans went into halftime down just 7-3 was a significant understatement of the opportunities the Titans had. Early in the second quarter, Rudolph threw an interception from the Patriots' 3-yard line with a high but catchable pass that bounced off the hands of tight end Chig Okonkwo, making it seven points.

And before halftime, New England gave the Titans good field position with a shanked punt and the Titans quickly stormed forward to the 35-yard line. But the Titans responded with a holding penalty, a delay of game and a wasted final timeout due to a player injury that wasn't serious. This all led to the Titans throwing two passes out of bounds to end the half rather than even attempting a Hail Mary, turning what should have been a kick within Nick Folk's reach into another empty possession .

Another half, another stumble

New England took its first lead early in the third quarter, largely due to a facemask penalty on cornerback Roger McCreary that should have been a third-and-goal stop to force a field goal that put the Patriots one End zone allowed for another attempt. But the Titans appeared poised to regain the advantage with a long, effective shot that landed inside New England's 8-yard line. Pollard made a nice juke on first-and-goal and scampered into the end zone for the go-ahead shot, but a holding penalty negated the play and pushed the Titans back.

Three plays from the red zone later, the Titans had to settle for a field goal and tie the score rather than take the lead.

Injuries are increasing

Starting safety Quandre Diggs and starting center Lloyd Cushenberry III both left Sunday's game with injuries and quickly exited. Diggs suffered a foot injury in the second quarter and was replaced by Mike Brown, while Cushenberry injured his ankle and was replaced by Corey Levin.

Diggs and Cushenberry join a significant list of Titans starters who missed Sunday's game due to injury: QB Will Levis, OL Dillon Radunz, RB Tyjae Spears, CB L'Jarius Sneed.

What's next?

The Titans travel west to take on the Los Angeles Chargers next Sunday. Kickoff is scheduled for 3:05 p.m. CT and the game will be televised on FOX.
