Not an SNL joke: Harvey Epstein is actually on the ballot in NYC

Not an SNL joke: Harvey Epstein is actually on the ballot in NYC

If advertising is good advertising, then New York Rep. Harvey Epstein hit the jackpot Saturday night when John Mulaney portrayed him in a fake political ad Saturday Night Live. (The same SNL which saw a cameo from none other than Kamala Harris.)

In case you missed it, the gist of the joke was that Epstein, who is currently running for New York City City Council, happens to share both a first and last name with two of the city's most notorious sex criminals: Harvey Weinstein and Jeffrey Epstein.

“See, is my name ideal? Of course not,” Mulaney-as-Epstein said in SNL'S fake Advertisement. “But luckily I’m a different guy.”

The same goes for the real Harvey Epstein, who, as a representative of New York's 74th District, represents parts of the Lower East Side, East Village and Midtown East neighborhoods in Manhattan. As a candidate for City Council, he has promised to address the city's housing crisis, improve access to mental health care and education funding and fight for the rights of people with disabilities.

“I’m not going to lie,” the fake Epstein continued SNL. “The name thing has become a problem. I could almost stand “Harvey.” But ‘Epstein’ – this thing is an albatross.”

In contrast to his SNL A look-alike (Mulaney wore a bald head to portray him), Epstein does not mention his unfortunate name in his campaign materials. But he might consider adding this line from the sketch as the election enters its final stages:

“Think of it this way. If my names are that bad and I'm still running for public office, think about how much better I'd have to be than everyone else. This is pure mathematics.”

Will Epstein see one? SNL Shock when the election results are available on Tuesday evening? We'll keep you updated.
