Norris is being investigated by the FIA after the start of the Brazilian GP was aborted

Lando Norris is at the center of an FIA investigation into an alleged breach of starting procedures at the Brazilian Grand Prix.

The McLaren driver had gotten away as usual on the formation lap, but plans for the original start had to be canceled after Lance Stroll crashed in Turn 4.

With Stroll's Aston Martin stranded in the gravel, the FIA decided to cancel the start just as the cars were forming up on the grid.

When the message “Start aborted” was displayed, Norris immediately set off again to complete an additional formation lap – which is a violation of the regulations.

Article 47.1 of the F1 Sporting Regulations states: “When the formation lap has begun and the race director decides that the start should be aborted, the abort lights will be switched on and a board reading “START ABORTED” will be displayed. The cars should return to the starting grid and all participants will be informed of the likely delay via the official messaging system.

“The start-up process begins again at the ten minute signal. Each time this occurs, the sprint session or race will be shortened by one (1) lap.”

Norris should have stayed on the grid and waited for a proper restart instead of driving an additional formation lap.

A number of other drivers, including Norris' championship rival Max Verstappen, initially remained on the grid as required by the rules – before eventually picking up speed again.

The FIA immediately announced that Norris was being investigated for his violation.
