Captain Nathan McSweeney and all-rounder Beau Webster hit fifties and steered Australia A to a seven-wicket win over India A in Mackay.

The duo together formed an unbeaten 141-run partnership for the fourth wicket, helping Australia A reach the 225-run target at the Great Barrier Reef Arena on Sunday morning.

McSweeney finished with 88 points, bolstering his claim for a Test debut in Perth this month, while Webster scored 61 points.

The start of the fourth day was delayed after the Indian players argued with umpire Shawn Craig over the match ball, which had been changed overnight due to scratch marks.

As the game began, McSweeney added to his 50 in 101 deliveries before increasing the tempo as India A turned to their part-time bowlers.

The South Australian top-scored in both innings of the game while his Test candidates Cameron Bancroft, Sam Konstas and Marcus Harris failed to improve their chances of a national call-up.

McSweeney has never opened the bat at first-class level, but the 25-year-old is considered a leading candidate to open the bat alongside Usman Khawaja in the Test side this summer.

“I think I'm playing pretty well right now,” McSweeney told reporters in the postgame press conference.

“I’m really confident in my game. I'm making progress and batting some of the best innings I've ever played.

“Hopefully I can continue to learn and get better. If the opportunity presents itself, I feel like I'll be ready.

“If not, I will continue to work hard and hope I get drafted one day.

“All I can worry about is making sure my game is OK… I have to keep trying to score runs.”

The second match between Australia A and India A begins on Thursday at the MCG.
