Ohio State leads Penn State behind Will Howard's 2 TDs: Live updates and reaction

Penn State QB Drew Allar continues to find himself in one of the more unique situations of any 2025 NFL Draft prospect. At 6-foot-1, 235 pounds, with tremendous arm strength and above-average athleticism, Allar has the tools to get in NFL teams like to invest for the long term.

But as was the case with LSU quarterback Garrett Nussmeier, one could make a pretty strong argument that Allar — one of the most physically gifted QB prospects in this class and likely a top-100 prospect — should play another year of college before he will be taken into the draft. Complicating matters perhaps is the question of whether Penn State's overall offensive approach will A) do Allar a favor or B) change enough to help him more with another year in 2025.

As we saw in Ohio State's 20-13 win over the Nittany Lions on Saturday, Penn State's gimmick-heavy offense can make it difficult to assess Allar's progress overall. The Nittany Lions change quarterbacks often, as was the case in this game. They put TE Tyler Warren under center, set up several odd formations, etc. And whether the gimmicks work, they do a disservice to Allar's ability to get into any natural passing rhythm. Many of Allar's throws come in high-pressure situations. He made 20 shots in that game, and seven of them came on third or fourth down in an offense that seemed to spend at least half of its time on trickery.

Allar has certainly improved this season. His miss rate (12 percent) is the lowest of his career, his air yards/attempts (9.3) are the highest, and he continues to display a dangerous, powerful arm between the numbers. Much like Michigan's JJ McCarthy last season, you have to squint to see the big prospect in Allar. Unlike McCarthy, Allar hasn't had many big hits in big games. He didn't have many chances either. Like many of the best QBs in the country right now, Allar is a tough call to make and will have an interesting decision to make at the end of the year.
