Will Territory return for Season 2 on Netflix? What we know so far

Will Territory return for Season 2 on Netflix? What we know so far

  • “Territory” is a new Netflix drama series about the fight for a cattle ranch in Australia.
  • The show has drawn comparisons to “Yellowstone” and “Succession.”
  • Here's everything we know about a possible second season.

Warning: Spoilers for the first season finale of “Territory.”

Netflix's answer to Yellowstone has arrived in the form of a new drama series with an in-depth look at Australia and one family's fight to preserve their heritage.

The focus of “Territory” by Timothy Lee and Ben Davie is Marianne Station, the largest (fictional) cattle ranch in the world.

After Daniel Lawson (Jake Ryan), the heir to the throne, is killed, the battle for the station goes into overdrive as the Lawsons try to prevent their land from falling into the hands of business rivals, gangsters and the territory's indigenous population.

The premise of “Territory” has inevitably drawn comparisons to “Yellowstone,” Paramount Network’s hit western drama starring Kevin Costner. Although “Territory” has only been on Netflix since Thursday, the streamer could have a hit on its hands. At the time of publishing this article, the neo-Western drama is ranked third on Netflix's list of the top 10 TV shows in the US.

Here's everything we know about a potential second season of Territory.

Netflix has not yet renewed “Territory” for a second season. But the series received rave reviews from The Hollywood Reporter, which called it a “drama to watch over and over again,” and from The Guardian, which called it a “'succession' set in the outback.”

With comparisons to hit shows like “Yellowstone” and “Succession” and a solid debut on Netflix, “Territory” could have a long life at the streamer.

Netflix has already cornered the market for romantic comedies and true crime films, but the Western genre remains largely untapped. Perhaps that's why Yellowstone, about a family that owns the largest ranch in Montana, has been such a huge success for Paramount.

Co-created by Taylor Sheridan and John Linson, the series spawned the prequel series 1883 and 1923, the latter of which stars Harrison Ford and Helen Mirren.

Although “Yellowstone” is coming to an end with its upcoming fifth season, the Sheridan TV universe will continue to expand with a sequel series called “The Madison” starring Michelle Pfeiffer.

With a large cast and a wealth of storylines, Netflix could also use “Territory” as a starting point for a larger universe.

The six-part season ends with unanswered questions and is therefore ripe for another episode

Not everyone makes it through the first season of “Territory” alive. At the end of the season, Susie Lawson (Philippa Northeast), the teenage daughter of Graham (Michael Dorman) and Emily Lawson (Anna Torv), is killed by a bull.

Then Lachie Kirby (Joe Klocek), who was dating Susie, reveals that his mother, a mining billionaire, Sandra Kirby (Sara Wiseman), has a plan to blow up some of the land sacred to the indigenous people hunting. By the time the Lawsons and the natives arrive, Sandra has already blown up the area.

Susie isn't the only victim. Rich Petrakis (Sam Delich) is shot by Colin Lawson (Robert Taylor) during an argument.

The finale ends with Colin giving Graham and Emily the keys to the house, suggesting they will become the new successors – meaning there's plenty more to explore in a potential second season.

“Territory” is now streaming on Netflix.
