This is how election night will unfold hour by hour

Election night in America will generally take place from east to west after the sun and polling station closing times.

CNN predicts who will win races as data becomes available.

While some non-competitive states could be forecast shortly after their polls close, others could be hours away.

The map is arranged so that the Republican candidate, former President Donald Trump, can see his share of the vote rise rapidly after early poll closures, especially given previous forecasts for more populous red states like Florida and Ohio.

Some of the biggest voter dumps for Vice President Kamala Harris, the Democratic nominee, have polling places that close later, including California and New York.

Here you can see when the polls close and how many votes are at stake per hour:

Elections have ended nationwide in the first six states, including the battleground state of Georgia, where there are 16 electoral votes. Who knows when there will be enough data to predict a winner in one of these states.

It's also important to note that polls in some parts of Indiana and Kentucky close earlier, at 6:00 p.m. ET. It will take time to get the forecasts even in some more red or blue states. In Florida, most polls also close at 7 p.m., but polls close at 8 p.m. and no statewide forecasts are made until all polls close in a state.

Georgia's secretary of state said that because of early voting and preprocessing of mail-in ballots, up to 70% of votes could be counted by 8 p.m.

  • 28 votes lean towards Trump: Indiana, Kentucky and South Carolina
  • 16 electoral votes lean towards Harris: Virginia and Vermont
  • 16 runoff votes: Georgia

Polls are closed in another battleground, North Carolina, as well as two red states.

  • 21 votes lean towards Trump: Ohio and West Virginia
  • 16 runoff votes: North Carolina

Polls are closed in 17 states, including Pennsylvania, the most populous of the industrialized “blue wall” states that Trump is trying to retake from Democrats after winning it in 2016 and losing it in 2020. Most polling places in Michigan and Texas are currently closed. but some counties don't close until 9 p.m

  • 74 votes lean toward Trump: Oklahoma, Missouri, Tennessee, Mississippi, Alabama, Florida and Maine's 2nd Congressional District
  • 78 electoral votes lean toward Harris: Illinois, Maine, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut, New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland and Washington, DC
  • 19 votes wrong: Pennsylvania

  • 123 lean towards Trump
  • 94 lean towards Harris

The polls in Arkansas are closing, the country has six electoral votes and is likely to support Trump. Polling stations are now closed in half of the states.

Polls are closed in 15 states, including the battlegrounds of Arizona, Michigan and Wisconsin. Polls will also be closed in some of the most populous states, such as Texas and New York.

  • 73 votes lean toward Trump, including Wyoming, North Dakota, South Dakota, Nebraska, Iowa, Kansas, Texas and Louisiana
  • 54 electoral votes lean toward Harris, including New Mexico, Colorado, Minnesota, New York and Nebraska's 2nd Congressional District
  • 36 runoff votes: Arizona, Wisconsin and Michigan

Polls are closed in three states, including Nevada, the last contested state.
