Male voters under 30 voting MAGA in 2024 explain Trump's appeal

Disillusioned with faltering Democrats, young men are turning to the “Make America Great Again” campaign in 2024.

According to a Harvard Kennedy School of Politics poll, male voters under 30 have shifted a total of 14 points in favor of Republicans over the course of just four years.

Citing inflation, immigration, the failure of the American dream, the left's war on “toxic masculinity” and the former president's ability to engage with his favorite podcasters, young men told the Post what drove them to vote in November to face Trump.

“When it comes to young male voters, I feel like the Democrats don't have a message for them. The Democrats have completely ignored this base,” Alex Bruesewitz, a 27-year-old Trump campaign adviser, told The Post.

“I believe there is a lack of testosterone in the Kamala HQ campaign team.”

The Trump campaign's strategy of targeting the bro podcast scene – by speaking to Joe Rogan and Logan Paul – and engaging on issues that matter to young men, such as immigration and strengthening the economy, has proven successful paid out.

Daniel Idfresne, a 20-year-old Syracuse student from Brooklyn, says Trump lets all of his schoolmates talk.

“I hear from my friends who aren't necessarily into politics that these clips (of Trump on podcasts) just naturally pop up in their feeds,” he said. “I think the Trump campaign has really succeeded in reaching young men, whether they are politically up-to-date or not.”

Idfresne voted early for Trump. He says his main motivations are inflation and the precarious state of international politics under Biden's watch.

The latest Times/Siena polls showed Trump leading Harris among young men 58 percent to 37 percent, significantly narrowing the gap he had over Biden in 2020. Since taking the Democratic nomination, Harris has made gains among young women, but she is doing no better than Biden among young men.

Team Trump has done a lot lately to pay attention to young men.

The former president appeared at UFC matches in front of cheering crowds, while the Republican National Convention was a testosterone fest, with UFC President Dana White giving a speech and wrestler Hulk Hogan ripping his shirt at the podium and wearing a red Trump Vance tank Above brought out below.

Since appearing on The Joe Rogan Experience, the episode has garnered 34 million views on YouTube as of last Friday. He also appeared as a guest on “This Past Weekend” with standup comedian Theo Vonn and on “Impulsive” with influencer and pro-wrestler Paul (whom he gifted a t-shirt with his mugshot on, prompting the podcaster to call him ” to call “gangsters”).

According to Gavin Wax, president of the New York Young Republican Club, seeing Trump argue with influencers is attractive to young male voters.

“Part of Trump’s appeal is the blatant machismo vibe that he exudes,” Wax, 30, told The Post. “He lived a full life and I think a lot of young men look up to him.”

Trump's campaign platform, dedicated to “the forgotten men and women of America,” focuses on issues that matter most to male voters, such as fighting inflation, “building the greatest economy in history,” and “reintroducing the American dream.” “. and make it affordable again for families, young people and everyone.”

According to a Wall Street Journal poll, young men overwhelmingly say the economy is their top issue, and voters under 30 trust Trump more than Harris on that score.

Idfresne says Trump's priorities appeal to him: “Conservatives give young men the general message that you can be the hero of your own story, and they provide an economic platform that allows you to be successful.”

Michael Oved, 20, says Trump also appeals to some young voters like him because he is expanding what it means to be a Republican.

“Trump's inclusion of RFK (Jr.) in his campaign shows his intent to diversify the ideas and people in the party, and that appeals to young voters,” Oved, a Harvard student who does not support Kennedy, told The Post .

Oved is the president of his college's Republican Club. Over the past year, he has watched the campus mailing list grow from 112 to 885 members.

He plans to vote for Trump in November, citing the economy, foreign relations and reviving the American dream as his top issues. He also likes how matter-of-fact Trump is.

“The youth are somehow fed up with politicians not telling them clearly. “Whether people support Trump’s policies or not, he tells it like it is,” Oved said.

Experts say Kamala Harris' campaign optics and advertising are also pushing young men toward Trump.

A widely derided campaign ad targeted “real men” who are “not afraid of women” and are “man enough” to vote for Kamala Harris.

“If a woman wants to be president… I hope she has the courage to look me straight in the eyes and accept my full support,” said an actor sitting on the tailgate of a pickup truck.

The stunt was widely derided online as the “saddest commercial ever.” Aside from the advertising aimed at men, many of Harris's messages are aimed at and appear to be aimed at women.

“If you look at the Harris campaign commercials, they're filled with excited women,” pollster and political consultant Frank Luntz told The Post. “There is hardly a man to be seen. Some men have noted this and cited this as a reason they feel unwelcome in the Harris campaign.”

Juan Llano, 24, says such messages are just part of a larger war against masculinity.

“I’ve seen too much craziness from the left in the last few years, and I’m tired of it,” Llano, an Emory University graduate, told The Post.

He voted for Biden in 2020, a decision he attributes to the influence of biased media sources and social media. However, in 2024, he's choosing Trump because he's all about promoting free speech while “fighting wokeness.” Additionally, Elon Musk's support helped seal the deal.

“It feels like we are being attacked, demonized and even dehumanized — at least to me and I think to other young men,” Llano said. “It feels like we’re being threatened, and we feel more comfortable voting for Trump.”
