Maxwell Frost and David Hogg say the permit-to-carry law contributed to mass shootings in Orlando

US Representative. Maxwell Frost sees a direct connection between Florida's new unauthorized carrying law and a Halloween shooting in his district.

During a press call organized by the Democratic National Committee, Florida Politics asked Frost about one Shoot Two people died and six others were hospitalized in Orlando early Friday. Frost, an Orlando Democrat, noted that it wasn't the first time shots were fired in downtown Orlando. He was present at a shooting nearby in 2016.

“Our police chief came and said that over the past few years we have typically been screening people and doing security checks to make sure people aren't bringing guns into downtown Orlando,” Frost said.

“They had to stop these checks this year due to a law passed in Florida called Permitless Carry, which allows people to conceal carry a gun without a permit. “Police haven’t been able to check people because they can’t tell people they can’t have a weapon in the area because the street is technically a public street.”

Video surveillance footage According to information released by the agency, the shooting occurred around 1:07 a.m. and the shots were fired off Washington Street on Orange Avenue. Police arrested 17-year-old Jaylen Dwayne Edgar after the incident.

Frost addressed the shooting during a call to activate young voters ahead of Tuesday's general election. The National Democrats were already planning to discuss gun violence with them David Hogga survivor of Marjory Stoneman Douglas High Shoot in Parkland in 2018. He was one of the founders of the March for our lives Movement that lobbied state governments to pass more than 100 new laws across the country.

“It's just common sense that if you allow more people in these areas to have firearms that are not trained, that there will be more random occurrences – random fights and other things like that.” — at worst, this would have been a fist fight that turned into a shootout,” Hogg said.

Hogg predicted the theme will continue to motivate people in major state-level competitions. He said he will be campaigning for the Florida House of Representatives candidate this weekend Nate Douglas and assumes that this will help the Democrat win House District 37.

Frost and Hogg said many young voters feel motivated to demand change in gun policy at the state and federal levels. Both support the Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris and believe the issue will sway many voters to support her on Tuesday.

Frost noted that the Democratic President Joe Biden founded the first national office to prevent gun violence. He has filed a bill requiring future administrations to keep this open and has been to one Ceremony at the White House with Biden and Harris when the initiative was announced.

“We still have a lot to do. But I’ll tell you this: The movement to prevent gun violence is the strongest it’s ever been,” Frost said. “We are stronger than the gun lobby. We are stronger than the NRA. We are stronger than weapons manufacturers. We know this because we have the most wins we have ever had. The first gun violence prevention office, the most comprehensive regulations to combat gun violence.”

He pointed out that a decade ago many Democrats were hesitant to embrace measures like an assault weapons ban, but that has now been included in the party platform.

“It is also part of our current and future president’s platform,” Frost said. “So we build power, we maintain power and we will continue to work to save lives.”
