Tottenham Hotspur begins their Europa League campaign against Qarabag as Ange Postecoglou's side return to European competition. However, kick-off in north London has been postponed due to “serious travel disruption” in the capital. Tonight's guests, Qarabag, arrived at the pitch late due to traffic, causing kick-off to be postponed to 8.35pm.

Spurs were not represented in Europe last season and missed out on qualifying for the Champions League in Postecoglou's first season as coach. The Australian has set his sights on winning a trophy in his second season at Spurs and the Europa League is a real opportunity for Tottenham to end their wait for silverware – but the club have previously won in Europe under Jose Mourinho and Antonio Conte problems.

Qarabag, the champions of Azerbaijan, is Tottenham's first test in the new Europa League format: in the new league phase they also face Ferencvaros, AZ, Galatasaray, Roma, Rangers, Hoffenheim and Elfsborg. Spurs returned to winning ways in the Premier League with a 3-1 home win against Brentford last weekend, but face Manchester United on Sunday.

Ange Postecoglou defends himself against criticism of the success of the “second season”.

After Ange Postecoglou defended his claim to “always win things” in his second year at a club, the Tottenham manager may have cringed after his team saw his team draw against Manchester City in the fourth round of the Carabao Cup.

The Europa League represents a great opportunity for Tottenham to win their first silverware since 2008.

James Maddison hopes Tottenham goal silences his critics

Tottenham playmaker James Maddison hopes his goal against Brentford will “shut some people up” but reiterated after Saturday's 3-1 win that it was all about the team.

Maddison capped his excellent performance with a fine strike in the 85th minute to secure the points after Dominic Solanke and Brennan Johnson canceled out Bryan Mbeumo's opener 22 seconds into the first half.

Maddison, 27, started the season with back-to-back assists but faced criticism after last weekend's defeat to Arsenal and responded with his first goal since March.

Son Heung-min reacts to an alleged racist comment from Spurs teammate Rodrigo Bentancur

Tottenham captain Son Heung-min has expressed his “love” for teammate Rodrigo Bentancur, despite the Uruguayan midfielder making an alleged racist remark about the South Korean over the summer.

The former Juventus player was charged by the Football Association last Thursday with alleged misconduct in connection with a media interview.

In the clip, which appeared in June, the host of a Canal 10 show asked Bentancur to show a Spurs player's jersey, to which the 27-year-old allegedly replied: “Sonny's? It could be Sonny’s cousin since they all look the same.”

Bentancur quickly apologized, saying it was a “serious breach”, but if an independent regulatory commission upholds the FA charge, he could be banned for six to 12 domestic games.

“We are not robots”: Son Heung-min on the game plan

Son Heung-min on the game plan:

“You don’t want players to have to deal with injuries. Nobody wants to see it. Lots of games, lots of traveling. We have to take care of ourselves, which is sometimes very difficult.

“Mentally and physically you are not ready. Then you go out onto the pitch and then the risk of injury is enormous. We are not robots. Don't get me wrong, we love playing football. That is clear.

“It’s about adding more games. City played on Sunday and Tuesday and it wasn't even flexible. It could probably be moved to play on Wednesday instead of Tuesday. It's not flexible. That's what we're talking about.

“It is normal for everyone to be at high risk of injury. It's not fair. Rodri said the right things. We play 50, 60 games and no more than 70 games. When the games come up, the players have to play. There’s a lot going on.”

Ange Postecoglou and Son Heung-min call for changes to the football calendar

Tottenham coach Ange Postecoglou and captain Son Heung-min have both insisted the growing football calendar needs to be taken into account.

Spurs begin their Europa League campaign at home against Qarabag on Thursday and the early stages of the competition have been extended to eight games instead of six, which also applies to the Champions League.

Manchester City midfielder Rodri suggested last week that players could strike due to the increasing busyness of the fixture list, before suffering a serious knee injury days later.

“You can take matters into your own hands. To be honest, they are the ones most affected. “So you would understand if you started thinking as a collective, how much do we have to permanently have no say?” Postecoglou explains.
