Four weeks without significant rain as October ends unseasonably warm

Four weeks without significant rain as October ends unseasonably warm

  • Warm up through Halloween
  • Pattern change from November
  • The chance of rain appears to be low

Warm up this week

Tuesday to Thursday: A large high pressure system is spreading across the eastern US and will heat things up! Thursday afternoon we saw highs in the upper 70s and even near 80 degrees. It looks like we will remain fairly dry for the remainder of October, with the month expected to see 1 to 3 inches below normal rainfall.

Temperatures will get warmer each day and may reach the upper 70s to low 80s by the end of the week.

Halloween: Trick or treat?

Halloween evening: Get ready for a fun evening! In the early evening, temperatures will be between 60 and 70 degrees with mostly clear skies – perfect for collecting the candy without the weather playing tricks!

Weekend changes

Friday: A cold front is moving in from the Ohio River Valley. At the moment it looks like it won't bring much moisture – just a few scattered showers.

However, we should expect some windy conditions and a slight cool down as we start the weekend. The wind may shed some leaves from the trees, especially in areas where the leaves are at their peak.

A mostly dry front arrives on Friday, bringing with it the slightest chance of showers.

Fire protection this fall

Fall fire season: Just a reminder: Fall fire season runs from October 15th to November 30th. It is important to avoid burns on warm, dry, windy days and always follow local fire regulations. If you decide to burn outdoors, never leave the fire unattended – remember that around 90% of forest fires are caused by humans!

Fall foliage update

October is coming to an end and the fall foliage is at its peak! Areas like Greenbrier and towns along the Blue Ridge Parkway look particularly lively this weekend. Elsewhere the colors are changing rapidly but have not quite reached their peak yet. Expect the beautiful fall colors to end in the next week or two!
