Mitchell Santner led the way as New Zealand defeated a strong Indian batting line-up to take complete control of the second Test on the second day in Pune. While the pitch played some tricks, India also regretted some of their shots as they lost six wickets in the session and were reduced to 107/7 at lunch.

Shubman Gill and Yashasvi Jaiswal made a positive start to the morning and struggled with boundaries. But against the run of play, Gill was caught on the leg in front of the wicket by Santner, triggering the collapse. Virat Kohli completely missed a flat full toss against Santner and lost his stumps, stunning the Pune crowd. While Rishabh Pant made a typical start by reaching the boundary on his second ball, Jaiswal was eliminated at the other end after slipping one.

From then on, every ball was an event because of the turn and bounce it offered. But it was the lack of bounce from a quicker delivery from Glenn Phillips that ensured Pant stayed deep at half-chaser to smash the stumps. India's long batting line-up didn't help their cause as the wickets just kept falling. Sarfaraz Khan gave Santner a miss and the left-arm spinner also quickly removed R Ashwin.

Washington Sundar survived an emergency lbw call just minutes before lunch and has a huge rebuilding task ahead of him alongside Ravindra Jadeja, with India still trailing by 152 runs.

Short scores: India 107/7 (Shubman Gill 30; Mitchell Santner 4/36, Glenn Phillips 2/26) Trail New Zealand 259 of 152 runs.
