Nick Nurse discusses the NBA's investigation into Joel Embiid, 76ers

Before the Philadelphia 76ers announced their season opener against the Milwaukee Bucks on Wednesday night, it was reported that the NBA wanted to open an investigation into the Sixers to investigate possible misconduct regarding the NBA's player ownership policy.

ESPN's Shams Charania confirmed that the league “officially” opened the investigation on Thursday.

Since the Sixers have denied that Embiid is dealing with an injury, his absence from a nationally televised game reportedly raised some red flags around the league.

Before tipoff on Wednesday, Sixers head coach Nick Nurse answered questions about the situation.

“I have no thoughts about it,” said the head coach. “Nobody from our organization said anything to me about it. As far as the investigation goes, I don’t really know.”

The Sixers announced their plans to place Embiid on a strict rest schedule this year. After the big man played in just 39 games last season and dealt with a knee injury that required surgery months before the playoffs, the star center wants to take a different approach to staying as healthy as possible in the postseason.

A week of training camp went by without Embiid taking part in any fights. The 76ers appeared in six preseason games and kept Embiid off the floor the entire time.

The Sixers will continue that trend in their first regular season games. Although Embiid is officially preparing to return, according to a team official, he will not be ready to play again this week. Embiid missed Wednesday's game against the Bucks and is expected to miss Friday's game against the Toronto Raptors and Sunday against the Indiana Pacers.

If the NBA decides that the Sixers are indeed in the wrong, the first offense could earn the team a $100,000 fine ESPN. Additionally, the fines increase to a reported $250,000 and for more than two violations to over $1 million.

While the investigation is concerning, it is not the only concern for Philadelphia right now. While they hope Embiid's new rest schedule will help the big man get into the playoffs healthy, the Sixers will have to figure out how to master team chemistry while keeping the seven-time All-Star center on the field for limited time throughout the year have space.

“It’s hard,” the nurse explained. “It’s still early and it just so happens that (Embiid and Paul George) are out. We will definitely need some continuity at some point. We're looking forward to getting them both on the floor and playing as many games together as possible and so on. It comes and goes with the seasons – you have boys in and boys out – it happens a lot. We have to deal with it, play as best we can, prepare as best we can and go from there.”
