Dorian Thompson-Robinson awaits further information on finger injury

Dorian Thompson-Robinson awaits further information on finger injury

The Browns announced Monday that QB Deshaun Watson, who left with an injury in the second quarter of Sunday's game against the Bengals, will miss the remainder of the season because of a torn right Achilles tendon.

“Obviously we’re disappointed when we lose someone to injury,” head coach Kevin Stefanski said Monday. “That’s a very, very, very unfortunate part of our game. So it's hard. We feel bad for Deshaun and in this case we feel bad about losing him for the season.”

After Watson's injury, QB Dorian Thompson-Robinson filled in for most of the game before injuring a finger on his throwing hand. Emergency quarterback Jameis Winston filled in for the rest of the game.

Here are the top news and notes from Stefanski's time with the media on Monday.

Thompson-Robinson injury update

Stefanski said the team will seek more information about Thompson-Robinson's injury Monday before making decisions about his status for Wednesday's practice and moving forward. He added that he was comfortable with Thompson-Robinson's availability for the rest of the season but needed more information about this week's game against the Ravens.

On Sunday, Thompson-Robinson entered a game as a backup quarterback rather than an emergency quarterback for the first time this season. Winston had previously served in a short-yardage package for the first six games of the season, but Stefanski said the team did not have a package installed with Winston for the game against the Bengals.

“I felt like both guys were worthy of being the backup quarterback,” Stefanski said Monday. “That’s what I told these guys at the beginning of the season. I felt like Dorian did well in practice and preparation because he didn't have the short yardage with Jameis in that last game that made him a reserve player.”

In about two and a half quarters of play, Thompson-Robinson completed 11 of 24 pass attempts for 82 yards and threw two interceptions. After the game, he recalled his first NFL start, which came in Week 4 against the Ravens in the 2023 season.

“I kind of remembered being at the Ravens game last year and had a feeling that I don’t want,” Thompson-Robinson said. “A feeling that leaves a bad taste in my mouth and something I need to look in the mirror and make sure I come out prepared next week.”

Against the Ravens, Thompson-Robinson threw three interceptions in the Browns' 28-3 loss. In his second start, six weeks later, Thompson-Robinson led the Browns to a 13-10 victory over the Steelers, setting up a game-winning field goal for the Browns on the final drive.

“Dorian is a competitor,” said WR Cedric Tillman, who played with Thompson-Robinson in high school. “We all know that I have been playing with Dorian for a long time. I recorded the last game so that it was his first game ever. We will all continue to improve.”
