Memphis 901 FC defeats Phoenix Rising to keep hopes of a top four finish alive

Memphis 901 FC and Phoenix Rising games usually feature offensive fireworks. A total of 16 goals were scored in the first three games.

The fourth – and most important of the bunch – only had one. Dylan Borczak scored the decisive goal shortly before halftime.

Borczak quickly turned the field around with a pass down the right wing to Jon Bakero before running towards the goal. He rushed to Bakero's cross, beat the ball to the defender and directed it towards the back post. His fourth goal of the season kept Memphis in contention for a home playoff game.

Akeem Ward created two chances of his own before Borczak made the breakthrough. Ward was active and helped direct the attack with crosses and opportunistic shots on goal.

Memphis was the more clinical team, but Phoenix's Darius Johnson made an early impact. In one-on-one situations he created for himself and others from the left wing.

Phoenix had possession and the opportunities, just not the shots on goal. Their only goal came in the 85th minute from a free kick from Charlie Dennis, the ball hitting the crossbar before being cleared by Memphis.

Each Western Conference team has one game left with everything to play for. Memphis is in fifth place, but could move up to second if its results worsen. With Oakland four points behind in sixth place, there is no danger of falling further behind.
