When the Crew defeated the Philadelphia Union on October 5, they secured second place in the Eastern Conference heading to the MLS Cup playoffs.

Securing second place guarantees the Crew home-field advantage for the first game of the best-of-three series and, if necessary, the third game as well. The dates for each first-round game have yet to be determined and are expected to be announced on Sunday, following the final games of the league's regular season, which will be played on what is known as MLS Decision Day.

In addition to the dates of the first round playoff games, the Crew is also waiting to find out who their opponent will be.

The New York Red Bulls and Charlotte FC are battling for sixth place in the conference, with Charlotte having 48 points and New York having 47 points. If they finish the season in a tie, Charlotte will be in control of the tiebreaker with 13 wins compared to New York's 11 wins.

A win for Charlotte in the away game against DC United automatically moves Charlotte to sixth place and the Red Bulls to seventh place, making New York the Crew's first round opponent.

A loss would drop Charlotte behind the Red Bulls if New York can record a win or a draw in its final game of the regular season, which is against the Crew.
