Home Depot requires company employees to work an 8-hour retail shift

Time to get those slippers dirty.

Home Depot will reportedly require its corporate employees – including executives and senior management – ​​to work an 8-hour retail shift at a store each fiscal quarter.

Starting in the fourth quarter of this year, even remote workers will have to drag themselves onto the gray floor and put on the orange apron four days a year.

“We need to stay connected to the core of our business so that we truly understand the challenges and opportunities our store associates face every day,” Chief Executive Officer Ted Deker said in a memo introducing the program obtained by Bloomberg.

According to Forbes, the policy – which is an expansion of previously established practices of allowing company employees to spend time in stores – is intended to create a more cohesive company culture.

Home Depot had annual sales of over $157 billion in 2023 and employs over 450,000 people.

The major retailer faced a small union push in 2022. The company recently announced that it would no longer screen its employees for marijuana.

Back in August, the Place Where Makers Get More Done suggested that Americans weren't working on home improvements all that much.

Home Depot CFO Richard McPhail told CNBC at the time that consumers had adopted a “postponement mentality” since mid-2023, resulting in lower spending on home improvement projects.

The supermarket warned that sales in 2024 may not reach the $150 billion mark that the company has surpassed in the past two years.
