Expert explains why Tennesseans should do earthquake drills

When you think of Tennessee, you don't usually think of earthquakes. But the Volunteer State has them.

Thursday marks the Great ShakeOut, with millions of people worldwide taking part in earthquake drills at work, school or home.

Steve Besemer of the Central US Earthquake Consortium joined FOX 17 News to explain why earthquake drills are important for Tennesseans.

“There is definitely a risk of strong earthquakes in Tennessee,” Besemer explained.

He says earthquakes are felt and occur in the Carolinas, affecting residents in eastern Tennessee. There is also a seismic zone in West Tennessee that has been proven to host some of the largest earthquakes ever to occur in the continental U.S., according to Besemer.

“With earthquakes, we don't get the kind of warning that we do with other events like tornadoes or hurricanes. When there’s an earthquake, you don’t really get any warning at all.”

So how should Tennesseans prepare for such an unusual event?

Besemer says residents should practice the “Drop, Cover and Hold” drill for protection and injury prevention.

“If you are in an area where you can lie down, get on your knees. Cover yourself – especially the back of your head and neck area. And if you have something to hold onto while the shaking continues, hold onto it until the shaking stops.”
