Mauricio Pochettino's men may have been exhausted by injury and injury, but they also dominated the pitch. If he needed a reality check about the depth of the player pool, he got one.

Folarin Balogun, Timothy Weah, Johnny Cardoso, Cameron Carter-Vickers, Chris Richards, Giovanni Reyna, Luca de la Torre and Tyler Adams all missed the international break due to injury.

Then Christian Pulisic, Weston McKennie, Marlon Fossey, Ricardo Pepi and Zack Steffen were sent back to their clubs for stress management after Saturday's 2-0 win over Panama. And Mark McKenzie was injured during warm-ups on Tuesday.

How did the other players do? Not great. Let's stick with some player ratings.

USMNT player ratings vs. Mexico (out of 10)

Matt Turner: 6.5 – Three saves. Couldn't do anything about any of the Mexican goals.

Antonee Robinson (Off HT): 5 – He was hardworking and clever going forward, but struggled with stance and passing on an inferior pitch.

Tim Ream: 5 — No one touched the ball more than Ream, but one of those touches was naive in his penalty area and was pushed away by Raul Jimenez for an assist.

Miles Robinson: 7 – Led the game in defenses, interceptions and clearances. Not bad for a player who had only started when Mark McKenzie suffered a groin injury during warm-ups. However, a poor result contributed to Mexico scoring.

Joe Scally: 5 – He's decent for the future, but not so much on his own side.

Aidan Morris (Off 83'): 5.5 — Sure he wasn't bad and played bravely, but the midfield was the Americans' weakness on Wednesday and he was there almost the whole time.

Gianluca Busio (Off 62'): 6 — Credit was given for two blocked shots, a game-best player at the time of his elimination. Won six out of seven duels in an admirable performance, although this physical fight was not his calling card.

Yunus Musah (Off HT): 5.5 – He was stripped of the ball on the right and did slightly better when pulled inside before being substituted for Zendejas at half-time.

Brenden Aaronson: 6 – Lost the ball a few times and struggled to convert his energy into anything other than jagged edges in the first hour (perhaps more often). But he kept fighting and got stuck in an astonishing 20 duels, winning ten of them. He was credited with three chances and his final 20 minutes or so was a welcome performance and showed excellent determination.

Malik Tillman (Off 63'): 6 — Struggled with his passing but was very busy and ready to battle.

Josh Sargent (Off 63'): 5.5 – Lacking the ball, he at least fought for the few scraps that came his way. Thirteen touches of the ball in 63 minutes aren't his fault, but oof.

Subs

Alex Zendejas (On HT): 6 — Showed passion but couldn't win the duels.
Kristoffer Lund (Via HT): 6.5 – Played solid defense, but failed to hit a cross shot that was the Americans' best chance.
Tanner Tessmann (on 62'): 6.5 — Brings bite and good passing to the midfield.
Brandon Vazquez (63rd minute): 6.5 — I fired three shots in a few minutes.
Haji Wright (63rd minute): 5.5 — Less than 10 touches per night.
Auston Trusty (83'): – N/A
