Patriots S Jabrill Peppers arrested for assault, strangulation and drug possession

Jabrill Peppers, a star safety for the New England Patriots who was elected team captain this season, was arrested Saturday morning and is expected to be charged with assault, strangulation and drug possession.

Braintree (Mass.) police responded to a call at a residence regarding an argument between two people. According to the police report, one victim was treated at the scene by emergency services. Peppers is charged with assault, battery, assault with a dangerous weapon, strangulation and possession of a Class “B” substance, suspected to be cocaine, according to the report.

Peppers is scheduled to be arraigned in court on Monday.

“We are aware of an incident involving Jabrill Peppers over the weekend that police are currently investigating,” the Patriots said in a statement. “We will have no further comment at this time.”

In an interview Monday morning on Boston radio station WEEI, Patriots coach Jerod Mayo said he has been in communication with Peppers.

“He called me that morning,” Mayo said. “I knew what was going on. We notified the NFL of what was going on. We’re still gathering information.”

On Saturday afternoon, the team ruled Peppers out for Sunday's game after listing him as questionable on Friday with a shoulder injury.

The Patriots signed the Peppers to a three-year, $24 million contract extension in August.
