Georgia Power's response to the hardest hit areas following Hurricane Helene

SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) – As of midday Monday, Georgia Power has restored power to more than 840,000 customers affected by Helene.

Efforts are still underway to restore power to approximately 370,000 customers who remain without power due to the storm.

Due to the significant damage caused by Helene, restoration work will take several days in many areas.

In many cases, the damage to the infrastructure is so severe that teams are rebuilding parts of the network rather than just repairing specific elements.

Updated damage estimates illustrating the extensive destruction caused by Hurricane Helene include:

  • Over 7,000 electricity pylons that needs to be repaired or replaced
  • Over 15,000 spans of wire equals more than 700 miles
  • Over 1,200 transformers
  • Over 3,000 trees on power lines This must be removed or fixed to restore power

The company continues to leverage additional resources from outside its system and currently employs more than 15,000 people, including support from Alabama Power, Mississippi Power and dozens of other companies.

Georgia Power has also mobilized crews from more than 35 companies from states as far away as Texas, Oklahoma, Indiana, Pennsylvania and New Jersey.

The company continues to acquire additional off-system resources to assist in the response.

The company says it will continue to release updated information throughout the restoration process and will make every effort to restore power to customers sooner than expected.

Customers are encouraged to regularly check the outage map for the latest information.
