3 takeaways from the Mavericks' dominance in the Magic

The Dallas Mavericks dominated the Orlando Magic 108:85 on Sunday evening and got off to a good start. Even if the Magic are missing Paolo Banchero, who dropped 50 points a week ago, it's always good to clear out the undermanned teams as intended.

The Mavericks scored 30 points in the first quarter, led by Luka Doncic's 14 points, their most points in an opening quarter so far this season. Slow starts have been a theme in the first five games, and they finally showed signs of life in the first 12 minutes of this game. By halftime the game was already out of control and Dallas was able to prevail until the end. As it was the first night in a row it was good to get the key players out and give them a bit of a break for Monday night.

Here are three takeaways from the Magic's dominance on Sunday night.

These are usually supposed to focus on the Mavericks, but Orlando's offense has been so poor without Banchero. Part of that is thanks to Dallas' defense, but no one was able to buy a basket. Cole Anthony (3/6) and Anthony Black (1/2) each shot 50% from the floor; no one else was above 40%. As a team, they shot just 31/93 (33.3%) from the floor and 8/41 (19.5%) from three. As if that wasn't bad enough, they only shot 18/40 on shots in the paint and missed a lot of shots at the rim. They need Banchero back as soon as possible.

Although Dallas led by almost 30 points, their offense wasn't great either, shooting just 10/32 (31.3%) from three and shooting 18 times. Luka Doncic had four turnovers, Gafford had three and 10 of the 13 Mavericks that played had at least one turnover. They've been pretty good at limiting their turnovers this season and that shouldn't be a big problem in most games.

A big reason for Dallas' slow offensive starts was Luka Doncic's sluggish starts. He ended up starting this game well, with 14 points and five rebounds on 5/9 shooting. Those 14 points grew to 25 by halftime, and the Mavs led by 25 points. When he comes out and plays at a high level from the start, he has a knack for squelching an opposing team's momentum.
