A 24-year-old Illinois man was arrested after he allegedly caused a disturbance in a voting line and then punched an election judge in the face, police said.

The incident occurred around 11 a.m. Sunday when Orland Park police officers were dispatched to the Orland Park, Illinois, township office because a man – later identified as 24-year-old Daniel Schmidt – was “causing disruption in the voting line.” “said the police.

“Officers on scene learned that Schmidt entered the municipal building and walked past numerous other voters who were waiting in line to enter the voting area,” Orland Park police said in a news release detailing the incident. “An election judge stationed at the entrance told Schmidt to stand at the back and wait his turn, which Schmidt refused.”

Police said that at that point, another election judge was called to assist with the disturbance and again instructed Schmidt to stand at the back, which Schmidt refused.

“Schmidt attempted to push past this election judge and was prevented from entering by this election judge and several other employees,” authorities said. “Schmidt began yelling profanities and punched the election judge in the face, knocking his glasses off.”

Several other guests jumped in and managed to restrain Schmidt until officers arrived and found him in the church office, where he attempted to resist arrest, police said.

“At Orland Park Police Headquarters, the Cook County State's Attorney's Office was contacted and approved (2) counts of aggravated assault on a victim over 60 (Class 3 felony), (2) counts of aggravated assault in a public place (Class 3 felony). ), (5) misdemeanor counts of resisting arrest and one misdemeanor count of disorderly conduct,” the Orland Park Police Department said.

Schmidt was held overnight and taken to the Bridgeview Courthouse for a hearing. The investigation is currently ongoing.
