2024 Breeders' Cup results: Saturday winners, payouts, schedule

2024 Breeders' Cup results: Saturday winners, payouts, schedule

(This article has been updated with new information.)

The Breeders' Cup World Championships is one of the richest events in sports, with over $30 million paid out in purses and awards.

Owners are paid up to 10th place and share their winnings with their jockeys and trainers under agreed terms. A win can carry more weight than just prize money, as it can also increase a horse's value when considering breeding.

The 2024 event, held at the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club in California, featured five Breeders' Cup races on Friday and nine more on Saturday. The Breeders' Cup has been held at other locations, including Santa Anita Park, Keeneland and Churchill Downs.

Jason Frakes of the Louisville Courier Journal looks at the horses running Saturday. Here's what he had to say about favorite City of Joy: “He's the favorite for the Classic, but there's a big question mark as he's never ridden on dirt. He has won six of seven career races in Europe and has the pedigree as a son of 2018.” Triple Crown winner Justify has won 18 Breeders' Cup races but is 0 of 17 all-time in the Classic.

The Courier Journal has a list of tips for this weekend. Ed DeRosa digs deep and has your best tips for this race day.

DeRosa writes of the Turf Sprint: “Cogburn did very little wrong, and since we're at odds in the next race against Thorpedo Anna, I'm going to play some tickets that won't let me beat this race. He’s a horse of the year as a sleeper if both Thorpedo Anna and Fierceness lose and he wins.”
