14-year-old rescued from Milton floods on floating fence – NBC 6 South Florida

As Hurricane Milton slammed into Florida, it spawned dozens of tornadoes, knocked out power to millions, damaged homes, flooded neighborhoods and led to hundreds of rescue missions.

Among the most dramatic was Hillsborough County Sheriff Chad Chronister and a deputy finding a 14-year-old boy floating on a piece of fence. Behind his seat the water was almost up to the roof of a house.

“It was literally like something out of a Castaway movie, he was laying on a fence waving at us,” Chronister told NBC affiliate WFLA after the rescue. “Out of breath, gasping for air as we pulled him up.”

As the two approached, Chronister yelled, “Let me spin around!” And the deputy told the teen, “Stay there!”

When they returned to him, the teenager waded to the boat and threw his shoes to the men, but they landed in the water.

The sheriff and deputy grabbed him as he tried to climb aboard and lifted him onto the boat.

Chronister later explained that the teenager had evacuated to a friend's house before the storm, but when he tried to walk home, he underestimated how deep the water was and couldn't swim well enough to get through.

Chronister and the deputy pulled him out of the flood and brought him to shore where he could continue home.

According to the sheriff, the neighborhood was not an evacuation zone and experienced flooding the likes of which he had never experienced before.
